Here is my artistic response to this week's Soul-Calendar-13 meditation verse by Rudolf Steiner. For a brief introduction to this project, please see the blog post for week 49, which is when I started this..
Rudolf Steiner's original soul-calendar-13 meditation
June 30 - July 6
Und bin ich in den Sinneshöhen,
So flammt in meinen Seelentiefen
Aus Geistes Feuerwelten
Der Götter Wahrheitswort:
In Geistesgründen suche ahnend
Dich geistverwandt zu finden.
And am I in the senses’-heights,
Thus blazes in my soul-depths
Out of spirit’s fire-worlds
The gods’ truth-word:
In spirit-grounds seek knowing-longingly
You spirit-kindred to find.
*As I don't want to infringe any copyright, I am offering my own, literal, translations here. There are many excellent translations available at calendarofthesoul.net but keep in mind that most translations lose at least some of the various possible meanings that lie within the original German. Starman's translation tends to be the most literal.
In the last verse we came back to the perspective of the 'I', the verse was written from the first person point of view. This soul-calendar-13 verse is also from the first person perspective. It is as if I am speaking with myself, I have come back into my own experience. When I experience all that I can experience through my senses, then the divine word of truth calls me to go search for my 'spirit-kindred'. To say 'calls' is an understatement though as this call comes from the spirit's fire-worlds and these words blaze in the depths of my soul. I can feel a strong desire, a deep knowing-longing to connect with those spirit worlds and look for who I really am and find my true family in those worlds, rather than within the world of the senses. The contrast between the heights of the senses and the depths of the soul suggests that in my search for myself through the senses I must go further than what those senses offer me. The truth-word of the gods tells me to go and look elsewhere if I am to find my spirit-kindred. I am to look in the spirit-ground, the spiritual foundation of the world. The verse seems to remind me that everything in my earth experience is upside down. The verse tells us that the ground or foundation of the world (and thus of me) is the spirit worlds, rather than this solid earth. And yet there is something magical about the senses: when I really go to the height of my senses, for example, by really looking very closely at a flower, touching it, smelling it, then through this experience something may be revealed to me which comes to meet me from that other, spirit-world. It comes to meet me through evoking a knowing-longing within me that recognises that however beautiful the world of the senses is, it can never give me to myself. So the heights of the senses sets aflame my soul's search for itself and for its true kin within the world of spirit.
