Artistic Response

Here is my artistic response to this week's Soul-Calendar-18 meditation verse by Rudolf Steiner. For a brief introduction to this project, please see the blog post for week 49, which is when I started this..

Soul-Calendar-18 meditation

Rudolf Steiner's original soul-calendar-18 meditation
August 4-10

Kann ich die Seele weiten,
Dass sie sich selbst verbindet
Empfangnem Welten-Keimesworte?
Ich ahne, dass ich Kraft muss finden,
Die Seele würdig zu gestalten,
Zum Geistes-Kleide sich zu bilden

My translation
Can I the soul swell,
That she herself unites
With the receptive world-seed-word?
I sense, that I strength must find,
The soul worthy to make,
To spirit-cloak herself to form.

*As I don't want to infringe any copyright, I am offering my own, literal, translations here. There are many excellent translations available at calendarofthesoul.net but keep in mind that most translations lose at least some of the various possible meanings that lie within the original German. Starman's translation tends to be the most literal

My interpretation of the soul-calendar-18 meditation

In this verse, I am asking myself whether I am able to expand my soul to such an extent that ishe can unite herself with the cosmic creative word. In other words, can I open myself up to infinite love, to inifinite devine creativity? That pretty much sums up the first half of the verse. The second half is a little more specific: can I shape my soul in such a way that she become a garment for the spirit? Or rather, can I find the strength to do this? Or rather, I sense that I must find the strength to do this! This verse then seems to offer another turning point towards the awakening, towards to the birth of the spirit child in the midst of winter. A turning point towards regaining my will, towards beginning to become actively involved again in my own spiritual development, which over the last months I have more or less entrusted to the spiritual worlds, making myself receptive without trying to interfere, accepting a kind of dreamy state, trusting that this would allow me to partake of the spiritual gift flowing inwards from the cosmos. Now I begin to sense that I need to muster my own forces again. And I need to use these forces to prepare my soul to become a worthy carrier of the spirit light. In order to do this, I need my soul to open wide so that she may then be able to unite herself with that cosmic creative seed-word.
