Here is my artistic response to this week's Soul-Calendar-22 meditation verse by Rudolf Steiner. For a brief introduction to this project, please see the blog post for week 49, which is when I started this..
Rudolf Steiner's original soul-calendar-22 meditation
Das Licht aus Weltenweiten,
Im Innern lebt es kräftig fort:
Es wird zum Seelenlichte
Und leuchtet in die Geistestiefen,
Um Früchte zu entbinden,
Die Menschenselbst aus Weltenselbst
Im Zeitenlaufe reifen lassen.
The light from world-widths,
Within lives it powerfully on:
It transforms into soul-light
And shines in the spirit-depths,
In order fruits to release,
Which human-self out of world-self
In time-course ripening let.

*As I don't want to infringe any copyright, I am offering my own, literal, translations here. There are many excellent translations available at calendarofthesoul.net but keep in mind that most translations lose at least some of the various possible meanings that lie within the original German. Starman's translation tends to be the most literal
It feels to me that here in Edinburgh, the season has truly turned. The natural world feels like it's begun its gathering in. Yes, the trees are still green, but the growth now is focused on fruit and seed, preparing both for life and death. After all, the fruit and seed will give rise to new life, whereas the plants and trees will in many cases lose their leaves eventually or die back altogether. This living and dying of the plant can easily be seen as a metaphore for our own spiritual development. With every step along the path of spiritual maturation, it seems we need to let go of old stuff and rebirth some parts of ourselves. I am saying 'we' as I suspect this applies to all of us, not just to me and so I feel justified in generalising here. I certainly feel the air has changed, become a little more crisp, the evenings are drawing in sooner too. But while the world out there is slowly darkening, the light within is slowly growing. Clarity of thought is perhaps increasing, a new sense of purpose might be emerging. Personally, my clarity fluctuates but yes, there seems to be something new waiting to emerge, to be born. This does not need to be something revolutionary, or even something that's noticeable to anyone except myself. Maybe it's just another small grain of new insight, new wisdom, that lets me see myself more clearly in relation to the world and other people. Maybe there is a slight increase in resolve in relation to letting go of something that no longer serves me. Certainly, although I have gone through the soul calendar over many years now, this feels like the first time I can truly sense that these fruits of self-development are gifted by the sun. It is as if the warmth, brightness and lucidity of the sun somehow transforms within me into my ability to see myself more clearly and thus grow more confidently into what I truly am. The light from cosmic widths shines on within me, becoming soul light and enlightening my spirit so that my human self can over time ripen, to eventually emerge as a seed from out the world self.
