Here is my artistic response to this week's Soul-Calendar-30 meditation verse by Rudolf Steiner. For a brief introduction to this project, please see the blog post for week 49, which is when I started this..
Rudolf Steiner's original soul-calendar-30 meditation
27 October - 2 November
Es spriessen mir im Seelensonnenlicht
Des Denkens reife Früchte,
In Selbstbewusstseins Sicherheit
Verwandelt alles Fühlen sich.
Empfinden kann ich freudevoll
Des Herbstes Geisterwachen:
Der Winter wird in mir
Den Seelensommer wecken.
There spring up for me in soul-sunlight
Thinking’s ripe fruits,
In self-awareness’ certainty
Transforms all feeling itself.
Experience can I joyfully
The autumn’s spirit-waking:
The winter shall in me
The soul-summer wake.
*As I don't want to infringe any copyright, I am offering my own, literal, translations here. There are many excellent translations available at calendarofthesoul.net but keep in mind that most translations lose at least some of the various possible meanings that lie within the original German. Starman's translation tends to be the most literal.
Such a close interplay between my inner development and the changing season. With the autumn and approaching winter, my inner clarity increases. The verse makes me aware of the inner light that is cast on everything around me and on myself as well. This inner light is the light of thinking, the fruits of which burst forth. It's the kind of thinking that Rudolf Steiner in his Philosophy of Freedom refers to as pure thinking or intuitive thinking. It is a heart-thinking that knows itself and a thinking that realises that the I (the Self) knows itself through and in thinking. Therefore, this thinking gives rise to certainty of self-awareness or maybe it's beter to say that this certainty arises within this thinking. All feeling is transformed in this certainty of self-awareness. I am trying to understand this. All feeling? Not all feelings, but all feeling, that is, not the results of feeling (the feelings) but the process, the experience of feeling is transformed. Moreover, this feeling process transforms itself in this self-awareness. It does not say that it transforms into self-awareness, but transforms in (within) self-awareness. In other words, all feeling takes on a totally new quality inside this self-awareness. This self-awareness shines a totally new light on all my experience, including my own feeling? Now I can experience with joy the waking up of spirit during the autumn, that is of my own spirit, of that divine aspect of myself that I may discover through the transformation of my thinking. And then I may look forward to the winter and realise that, with this ongoing awakening of my spirit, the winter will provide the culmination of this development: the summer of my soul!
