Soul-Calendar-34 meditation

Rudolf Steiner's original soul-calendar-34 meditation
24-30 November

Geheimnisvoll das Alt-Bewahrte
Mit neuerstandnem Eigensein
Im Innern sich belebend fühlen:
Es soll erweckend Weltenkräfte
In meines Lebens Aussenwerk ergiessen
Und werdend mich ins Dasein prägen.

My translation
Secretely the ancient-heritage
With newly-risen selfbeing
Within the inner realm itself experiencing to feel:
It shall waking world-strengths
Into my life’s outer-work pour forth
And becoming me into presence shape.

*As I don't want to infringe any copyright, I am offering my own, literal, translations here. There are many excellent translations available at calendarofthesoul.net but keep in mind that most translations lose at least some of the various possible meanings that lie within the original German. Starman's translation tends to be the most literal.

My interpretation of the soul-calendar-34 meditation

This is quite a hard verse to translate. 'Geheimnisvoll' is really more like 'secret-filled'. But my sense of this verse is that it draws my attention to a different quality of my self, of my self-being, that has arising within me in the course of the last weeks and month, a quality in the realm of the feeling life, in the realm of how I experience myself. It speaks of something that is ancient, something that has been preserved from ancient times, which I understand as referring to the ancient Mysteries, the Mystery schools through which in olden days selected inidivduals would be initiated into the deepest secrets of the world, the cosmos and the human being. The verse seems to suggest that these ancient secrets have evolved throughout the ages to rise up anew within me, within each human being, giving rise to this new self-being. And this new self-being is now membered consciously to the spiritual worlds and as such is able to receive cosmic forces and pour these forces into my deeds. In this way, my deeds become inspired, they become comsic in quality and in harmony with the spiritual worlds. And it is this membering of myself to the spiritual world, this process of continuous becoming more like my higher self, of growing into that higher self, as it were, that also shapes me to become truly present, truly here, truly alive.
