Here is my artistic response to this week's Soul-Calendar-35 meditation verse by Rudolf Steiner. For a brief introduction to this project, please see the blog post for week 49, which is when I started this..
Rudolf Steiner's original soul-calendar-35 meditation
Kann ich das Sein erkennen,
Dass es sich wiederfindet
Ich fühle, dass mir Macht verlieh'n,
Das eigne Selbst dem Weltenselbst
Als Glied bescheiden einzuleben.
Can I being recognise,
That it finds itself again
I feel, that to me power is lent,
The own self to the world-self
As member modestly to join

*As I don't want to infringe any copyright, I am offering my own, literal, translations here. There are many excellent translations available at calendarofthesoul.net but keep in mind that most translations lose at least some of the various possible meanings that lie within the original German. Starman's translation tends to be the most literal.
Where am I now on this journey towards the winter solstice? Can I recognise being? What being? (In English this is confusing. 'Das Sein' in German refers to the noun form of the verb 'to be'; In English the word 'being' as a noun tends to refer to 'a' being, that is a living entity, but I think what is meant here with 'Das Sein' is not a living entity, but the living itself, the beingness, or 'the to-be-ness'). Can I recognise, see, the beingness that rediscovers itself within the creative urge of my soul? Maybe what is referred to here is that when I meditate on my own creativity (as in the force within me that urges me to be positively active in the world, to create beauty, to contribute towards the evolution of humanity), I discover that this very force is the force of life, that it is the self-same force of beingness, of existence, of cosmic life itself. In other words, the spiritual source of the world finds or recognises itself through my creativity. This source of life seems to need human creativity in order to see and therefore to know Itself. Through this discovery then, that within my own creative urge the beingness or 'to-be-ness' of the world discovers itself, I feel that I am given the permission and the strength to create out of this beingness, out of this cosmic source and thereby I become a true member of humanity, in that my creativity is now no longer flowing out of my lower self, but out of my higher self, membered as it is, in modesty, to the world-self. Whether or not I am able to actualise this all the time is beside the point. The key is to realise that the verse makes me aware of something that is constantly shifting towards this ideal of being able to act out of the spiritual world in a never-ending cycle of time and that this constant transformation on the inner plane is mirroring the transformations in outer nature through the seasons, so that we can ultimately find ourselves in nature and find nature in ourselves, both elevated to the level of spirit, without losing the vital connection with the Earth.
