Here is my artistic response to this week's Soul-Calendar-37 meditation verse by Rudolf Steiner. For a brief introduction to this project, please see the blog post for week 49, which is when I started this..
Rudolf Steiner's original soul-calendar-37 meditation
Zu tragen Geisteslichte in Weltenwinternacht
Erstrebet selig meines Herzens Trieb,
Dass leuchtend Seelenkeime
In Weltengründen wurzeln,
Und Gotteswort im Sinnesdunkel
Verklärend alles Sein durchtönt.
To carry spirit light into world-winter-night
Strives soulfully my heart’s drive,
That shining soul-shoots
In world-grounds take root,
And God’s word in sense’s-dark
Transfiguring all being sounds through.
*As I don't want to infringe any copyright, I am offering my own, literal, translations here. There are many excellent translations available at calendarofthesoul.net but keep in mind that most translations lose at least some of the various possible meanings that lie within the original German. Starman's translation tends to be the most literal.
To carry the spirit light into the darkness of winter nights. Yes this is very necessary and indeed I long to hold fast to a sense of awe for the world, so that despite the outer darkness I feel connected to the divine. Last night I went outside to see if I could spot the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction that is current, but it turns out I was too late. Where I am, you have to go out just after sunset and then find a place where you can see the low South-Western sky. Nevertheless, I did see some stars despite the stray lights from street lights and was reminded of the reality of the cosmos, of the vastness of this world, of the incredible beauty of the manifested universe. There is something about that experience of space and the mysterious light that comes to us from the stars that seems deeply connected to this verse. It is as if each and every star represents one of the shining soul-sprouts, rooted in the cosmic ground. And there is a sense in which the stars out there, far away in the macrocosm, actually are reflected within my soul, no, more than that, are one with my soul. This deep sense of awe that is inspired by a brief encounter with the night sky helps me to feel the deep mystery of life in general and of my own life. It is as if this feeling is a whispering of the Gods within my soul that transforms my perception of the outer manifestations of life into love and a profound sense of the sanctity of life, of all life, my life, your life, the tree in my garden. I am left filled with reverence and gratitude.
